Why some journeys take longer—but mean more

At 15, Lynette Nicholson took her first drink and immediately felt a transformation—from crushing self-doubt to soaring confidence. What she didn’t realize was that alcohol had already begun its tight grip, one that would shape the next decades of her life.

For years, drinking meant blackouts, bloating, and brutal hangovers—yet she never missed a day without a drink. Even motherhood couldn’t break the cycle; after staying sober through pregnancy, she slowly returned to alcohol, believing she could control it this time. She was wrong.

At 28, after one too many terrible incidents, she stopped—for 14 years. Then came the lie so many tell themselves: “I’m older now. I can drink sensibly.” That first drink led to a year of daily drinking, blackouts, and shame. She learned the hard truth: relapse doesn’t pick up where you left off—it drops you right back into the deepest part of the addiction.

Since 2010, with only two brief slips in 2017, Lynette has lived sober, clear-eyed, and free. The difference this time? Acceptance. She now knows there’s no such thing as “just one drink” for her—and that honesty has been her strongest shield.

Her story isn’t about perfect sobriety—it’s about perseverance. It’s a powerful reminder that recovery isn’t a straight line, but every day without alcohol is a victory.

2. In Texas, a drunk driving crash occurs every 23 minutes, resulting in over 1,000 deaths in 2024 alone. To combat this crisis, the Texas Department of Transportation has launched its "Drive Sober. No Regrets." campaign, pairing public awareness with increased law enforcement vigilance through Labor Day.

3. A record number of Americans—especially young adults and women—are ditching alcohol, driven by growing health concerns and shifting social trends. Portland has emerged as a national leader in the sober-friendly movement, with bars, breweries, and bottle shops fully embracing creative non-alcoholic options to meet rising demand.

4. Ugly Kid Joe's acclaimed 1995 album Menace to Sobriety—initially overlooked in the US despite being hailed as "album of the year" by Kerrang!—is finally returning to vinyl in November 2025. The reissue, featuring both standard and deluxe editions, celebrates the record’s legacy as a defining work in the band’s catalog.

5. A Cy-Fair ISD bus driver was pulled over and administered multiple sobriety tests after concerned parents reported erratic driving; she passed two field tests and a negative alcohol screening, but remains on leave pending drug test results. The incident, witnessed by middle school students onboard, has sparked community alarm over student safety despite the unresolved investigation.

Tip of the Day

Since alcohol isn’t an option, create a new ritual for when stress hits: a 5-minute walk, loud music, calling a sober friend—whatever signals to your brain: “We pause here. We don’t pour here.”
