An Unforgettable Journey from Addiction to Recovery
Christopher Wren II, a proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander man with English heritage, grew up in Cairns, Queensland. The eldest of three boys, Chris had a stable upbringing with parents who drank in moderation and instilled strong religious values. Despite a loving home, Chris felt restricted by his parents’ rules, not realizing they were more like a seatbelt than a straightjacket—meant to protect, not confine.
At 14, Chris started working as a paperboy and soon rebelled against his family, leaving home and bouncing between relatives. By then, fear and resentment had taken root. He began stealing and wagging school, leading to his first encounter with alcohol at 15. What started as a stolen bottle of Jim Beam spiraled into a 26-year battle with addiction, fueled by alcohol and cannabis.
![]() | Chris became a father in 2000 and started a family, but his addiction worsened. He missed the births of two of his children due to drunkenness, faced multiple domestic violence orders, and lost his license eight times for DUIs. His life became a cycle of blackouts, mental health crises, and hospital stays. During his fifth visit to a mental health unit, a nurse and AA member shared his story of 21 years of sobriety. Desperate for change, Chris attended his first AA meeting, but his journey wasn’t linear. For two and a half years, Chris relapsed repeatedly, earning the label of a “serial relapser.” But his sponsor never gave up on him. On October 11, 2016, after a particularly rough hangover, Chris had his first spiritual experience. A sense of peace washed over him, and he heard his Higher Power say, “That’s enough. No more drinking.” |
Since July 22, 2019, Chris has been clean and sober. He works the Steps, serves his home group, and practices daily spiritual routines. His life is now guided by the principles of AA: “Trust God, clean house, help others.” Chris’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and the support of a sober community.
![]() | As Chris often says, “You won’t get AA—AA will get you. And it works if you work it.” If you have a story that you would like to share with our community please drop us a quick email to [email protected] and we will ensure to contact you back asap to discuss your journey… |

The owner of Grandmaison Recovery Homes is seeking a zoning variance to increase occupancy at its Manchester women's sober house from 8 to 13 residents, arguing the change will better meet growing demand while maintaining neighborhood standards through strict rules and community integration. The request emphasizes the facility's role in supporting recovery through structured living, employment requirements, and 12-step programs, warning that denial could force vulnerable women into unstable housing situations.

Play the tape forward. When a craving hits, pause and imagine how you'll feel TOMORROW if you give in vs. if you stay strong.
