A Story of Courage, Redemption, and Renewal…
At 32 years old, Lucas, a skilled carpenter from Illinois, celebrates one year of sobriety today, February 28, 2025. His journey to this milestone has been anything but easy, but it’s a testament to the power of self-love, determination, and the support of those who never gave up on him.
Lucas’s relationship with alcohol began at the age of 14 during a camping trip with his older brother and friends. What started as an occasional indulgence soon became a weekend habit in his late teens, and by his 20s, drinking had become a near-daily escape. Life’s challenges—work stress, boredom, and the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic—pushed Lucas further into the grip of addiction. What began as a few fireball shooters on the way home from work snowballed into a relentless cycle of dependency.

By 2021, Lucas was drinking 20-30 fireball shooters a day. His relationships suffered, his finances were in shambles, and his health was deteriorating. He tried rehab once, believing it would be a quick fix, but relapsed shortly after. The next two years were a blur of reckless behavior, emotional pain, and a growing sense of hopelessness.
But Lucas’s turning point came in small, powerful moments. A birthday dinner with his parents, where he couldn’t stay sober for one night, left him ashamed. A handmade blanket from his niece, adorned with photos of him drinking with her children, broke his heart. And finally, a failed woodworking project—a craft he once excelled at—made him realize how far he had fallen.
“I only had three options,” Lucas recalls. “Get sober, die, or go to prison. And if I didn’t decide, life was going to choose for me.”
With the support of his boss, who shared his own struggles with addiction, Lucas entered rehab again—this time with a new mindset. He understood that sobriety wasn’t a cure but a lifelong commitment. It was a tool he would need to wield every day to reclaim his life. The past year has been transformative for Lucas. He’s rediscovered his passion for woodworking, rebuilt broken relationships, and found joy in being present for his family and friends. The woman he loves, though no longer his partner, remains a steadfast supporter, proving that love can take many forms. | ![]() |
“Sobriety isn’t easy,” Lucas says. “My addiction is always waiting around the corner, but I’m ready to fight. I’ve learned to love myself more than my addiction, and that’s made all the difference.”
Lucas’s advice to anyone considering sobriety is simple yet profound: “Just do it, and do it with all your heart. You’ll lose some friends, and people might act weird around you at first. But the friends you lose were never really friends. You’re not alone, and there’s no shame in asking for help.”
Today, Lucas stands tall as a carpenter, an uncle, a friend, and a man who has reclaimed his life. His story is a reminder that no matter how dark the path may seem, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow. Happy one year of sobriety, Lucas. Your journey inspires us all.
